What type of housing is available for grad students?
Graduate students are responsible for finding and paying for off-campus lodging.

A variety of housing options are available near the university. The Carnegie Mellon Housing Office website lists housing information, and the Off Campus Housing page provides many off campus housing resources. Once you have confirmed your acceptance of our offer, you will receive your student ID, granting you access to the CMU Housing website.

What’s the cost of living in Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh’s cost of living is relatively low. The federal government estimates that it will cost a graduate student approximately $18,000 a year to live here. That figure includes rent, utilities, and food expenses, but not tuition, fees, or health insurance costs.

How much should I budget for textbooks?
The university estimates that a graduate student will spend approximately $3,000 for books/supplies/fees.

If I come to Pittsburgh in June for a preparatory or English-language course, can I live in a dormitory for the summer?
Carnegie Mellon does not provide housing for graduate students, although housing Services occasionally has access to short-term accommodations during the summer semester. You can visit the Housing Office website for more information.
