First Summer for the Internship Program Proves Successful

By Jen Moritz

Summer 2020 brought many new changes, one being it was the first summer that the Master of Software Engineering Professional Programs (MSE) had a cohort of students complete a summer internship. The Master of Software Engineering – Scalable Systems program (MSE-SS) saw 26 students complete a 10- to 12-week internship at a wide range of companies — Amazon, SAP, GoDaddy, TuSimple, Salesforce, and NetApp to name a few.

The internships may have looked differently than what was expected as all internships were remote. This did not change the fact that students had opportunities to work directly on projects that will leave lasting impressions for both the students and companies. Yunru Ge shared that she had an incredible experience as an intern at Motorola/Lenovo. She said, “I was able to grow professionally and personally, and learned a great deal from every task while challenging my critical thinking and technical skills.” The internship requirement was built into the program to do just that — to help the students learn and grow.

While COVID had other plans, it did not stop the 2020 MSE-SS cohort from growing professionally thanks to the ability for the students to participate remotely.
